Our Story
Quality Gourmet Chef is a family owned and operated food manufacturer based in Marleston, South Australia.
Before founding Quality Gourmet Chef, George Savva sold fresh seafood and take-away seafood and chicken from his shop in Noarlunga, Adelaide. During the off-season in winter, George took the opportunity to improve the shop’s sales, and this led to the creation of our first product, Seafood Crepes, in 1987. We sold the Seafood Crepes to fish markets and retail fish shops every morning. The success of the crepes led us to start producing other Savoury Crepes including Chicken & Mushroom and Ham & Pineapple.
Quality Gourmet Chef began supplying crepes to restaurants in 1988 as they proved to be a valuable time-saving measure for chefs without compromising on quality. In 1990 Gourmet Chef was recognised as one of the “biggest crepe manufacturers” in South Australia, producing many savoury varieties including Seafood, Chicken & Mushroom, Chicken & Asparagus, and Spinach & Ricotta. The business expanded to making a range of desserts including Brandied Apricot, Forest Fruit and Black Forest (with a Chocolate wrapping).
In 1993, in a joint venture with Mexican Express, we started making Chimichangas (burritos) in three varieties: Chicken, Beef and Vegetarian. The US Navy purchased the Chicken Burritos when they were stationed in Australia. In 1995 we began supplying Chicken Burritos to Hog’s Breath Cafe and they continue to serve our Chicken Burrito today.
Due to growing demand, Quality Gourmet Chef also started making Pancakes in 1993, supplying major customers in the Australian and New Zealand food service market including Coffee Club. Our range of filled crepes were gradually phased out of production in 2000.
Now based in Marleston, We’re proud to have grown from a local seafood supplier into a nationwide food supplier, with distributors in several states. The Savva family still owns and operates the business today, and employs 15 production and office staff.
